DAAN GHATI DARSHAN

In ancient times, Dan Ghati was the sacred site where Lord Krishna playfully demanded taxes (Dan) from the Gopis as they passed along the path carrying milk and dairy products. The term Dan in Sanskrit means “tax,” and this holy pastime is celebrated as a symbol of Krishna’s sweet, mischievous, and divine exchanges with His beloved devotees. Dan Ghati is situated on top of the sacred Govardhan Hill, exactly where the national highway of Mathura now crosses the hill. The natural formation of Govardhan Hill resembles a peacock, and Dan Ghati is identified with the narrow stretch symbolizing the peacock’s neck.
