SHRI GOPESHWAR MAHADEV
Shri Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most ancient and spiritually significant temples of Vrindavan, located near Vamshivat on the banks of the Yamuna River. It holds a unique place in Vrindavan’s divine history, as it is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Gopi form, honoring the time when he entered the eternal Maha Raas of Shri Radha and Krishna. The temple is deeply revered as a sacred gateway for devotees aspiring to experience the highest bliss of Vrindavan.
Spiritual Significance
According to tradition, while meditating on Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva heard the divine sound of Shri Krishna’s flute, which drew him instantly to Vrindavan. He wished to enter the Maha Raas, the most intimate divine dance of Radha and Krishna. However, he was stopped at the entrance by Vrinda Devi and the Gopis, since no male except Shri Krishna could participate.
Determined, Lord Shiva meditated on Shri Radha Rani, and through her grace, he was instructed to bathe in Mansarovar. Emerging as a beautiful Gopi, known as Shivani Gopi, he entered the Maha Raas. Seeing this, Shri Krishna joyfully welcomed him and gave him the name Gopeshwar—the Lord of the Gopis. He also blessed Shiva with the eternal role of Raas Dwaar Paal (Gatekeeper of the Maha Raas).
Even today, devotees believe that Shri Gopeshwar Mahadev grants the boon of Gopi Bhava (the mood of selfless devotion) to sincere seekers, helping them achieve the highest spiritual bliss of Vrindavan.
