SHRI SHRINGARVAT TEMPLE

Shringar Vat is one of the oldest and most sacred temples of Vrindavan, located on the banks of the holy Yamuna River. With a history dating back nearly 700 years, this divine site is deeply revered for its intimate connection with Shri Radha and Krishna’s pastimes as well as its association with Sri Nityananda Mahaprabhu, who stayed here performing bhajan and devotional sadhana.

Spiritual Significance

The word Shringar means decoration or adornment, and Vat refers to the Banyan tree under which these divine pastimes took place. According to tradition, once Shri Radha Rani expressed her desire for Krishna to adorn her. In response, Lord Krishna personally decorated Shri Radha Rani beneath this Banyan tree—adorning her hair with flowers, applying anjana (kajal) to her eyes, and embellishing her with ornaments set with precious gems. This act of loving devotion is why the site is called Shringar Vat.

It is also said that during the Maan Leela, when Radha Rani left the Raas Leela in playful anger and hid herself here, Krishna came searching for her and lovingly performed her shringar under this sacred tree, which still stands today as a living witness to the divine pastime.

This temple also carries special importance in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. Sri Nityananda Prabhu, during his visit to Vrindavan, resided under the same Banyan tree, absorbed in chanting the holy names of Krishna. Overwhelmed with divine separation, he would often cry and shout aloud, expressing the purest love for the Lord.
